Hunting

Previous to the universal domesticizing of beasts, hunting was a crucial item of hunter-gatherer societies and is a thesis of many chronicles and fables, as well as a great number of adages, aphorisms, proverbs and metaphors even these days.

Provincial hunting societies and national organizations supply hunter tuition and help defend the future of their sport by buying land to designate as havens. They also lobby in Washington as well as various state capitals. Two well known private organizations are Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl.

Varmint hunting is an American saying for the slaughter of non-game animals which are renowned as vermin. While not an efficient style of pest control (poisoning and trapping are much more effective), it does provide leisure time and is not as regulated. Varmint species are very often responsible for destructive effects on landscaping, infrastructure, pets, crops and livestock. Some animals (such as squirrels or wild rabbits) may be used for meat or fur, but oftentimes no use is made of the carcass. Which breeds are classed as "varmints" depends on the circumstances and district. Common varmints include various foxes, feral hogs, coyotes, feral cats, crows and rodents. Some animals once known as varmints are now protected, such as wolves.

In the United States of America hunting is not allied with any specific culture, level of sophistication or class. Present-day statutes of hunting within the United States dates back to the 1800's and most contemporary hunters see themselves as modern thinkers, sportsmen and conservationists, following in the footsteps of of Theodore Roosevelt. The Boone and Crockett Club, which was founded in the U.S.A. in 1887 by Theodore Roosevelt, is a notable example of this. In the beginning, the name was intended to honor Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett, who were seen as ethical hunters, honest men and caring individuals who cherished the outdoors and manly pursuits. In addition to authoring an exalted "fair chase" statement of hunter principles, the fellowship strived for the abrogation of industrialized hunting, the inception of wildlife reserves and conservation based regulation of hunting in general.

Each and every year, approaching 200 million dollars in hunters' Federal excise taxes are distributed to State agencies in support of wildlife management programs, the procurement of lands open to hunters, and hunter instruction and safety classes. Starting in the early nineteen thirties the sale of Federal Duck Stamps, a compulsory purchase for migratory waterfowl hunters over sixteen years old, has raised above 700 million dollars to help purchase more than 5.2 million acres (20,000 km²) of habitation for the National Wildlife Refuge System. These are lands that support waterfowl and many other wildlife varieties and which are often open to hunting. States also receive revenue from hunting licenses which assists with the management of game animals as designated by Federal law. An essential task of Federal and state park rangers and game wardens is to implement laws and regulations related to hunting, including protection of species, hunting seasons and hunting bans.
